Post-doctoral Fellowship

Post-doctoral Fellowship applicants must read the following information before beginning the application

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant:

1.    Has earned a doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.D.) in the field of medicine, public health, biomedical, behavioral, mathematical, social sciences, or others.

2.    Is proficient in written and spoken english.  Note:  only applications submitted in English will be reviewed.

3.    Is affiliated with one of the following types of institutions:  for-profit organization, non-profit organization, public or private institution (i.e., universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories), state/provincial government, local government, or non-governmental organizations.

4.    Must have an appropriate mentor who holds an established post for the duration of the Fellowship and has a track record in research and training in HIV and drug abuse.

5.    Must be able to submit documentation from the host institute and the mentor confirming the guarantee that space and facilities will be made available for the prospective Fellow should they be successful in obtaining the Fellowship.

6.   Has discussed with and received approval from the mentor for the research proposal.  Note:  Once submitted, changes to the application will not be allowed.

Fellowship Information

1.   Applications will be accepted between March 9, 2009 and April 17, 2009.  Any applications received after this date will not be considered.

2.   Individual applicants are limited to submitting only one application in this competition.

3.   The application must be completed and submitted by the individual applying for the Fellowship.

4.   The selected Fellow will complete an 18-month Fellowship in the field of HIV and drug abuse during which will be provided research training with a mentor who is an expert in the fields of HIV and drug abuse research.

5.   A stipend of $75,000 USD will be offered to cover cost of living, personal expenses and round-trip travel during the 18-month Fellowship period.

6.   By the end of the Fellowship, the selected Fellow should be able to:

a.   have a better understanding about the issues related to HIV and drug abuse, prevention of HIV acquisition and transmission among drug abusers, and other related issues;

b.   design a research project related to addressing HIV in relation to drug abuse;

c.   report his or her work to an international HIV conference;

d.   to submit a manuscript to a peer-reviewed scientific journal; and

e.   apply relevant knowledge and skills gained during the Fellowship in his or her home country.

1.   Correspondence between the IAS/NIDA Fellowship Program and applicants will be done primarily by email. Therefore you must have a valid personal e-mail address that you regularly check.

3.   The information you provide on this form is considered confidential and will only be used for IAS and NIDA.

 

The Application 

 

1.  Before you begin the electronic application process, please review a sample of the actual application.  Click here to view a Sample  Applicant Form or Sample Mentor Form.  We recommend you print out a copy to use as a reference.

2.  Before you begin please gather the following information which is necessary to complete several sections of the application. 

For Both Applicant Types:

a.   Passport number.

b.   Description of current job duties.

c.   Past Education and Training History including institution name and location; field of study, dates attended, diploma/ degree type, thesis title, etc.

d.  Listing of significant publications and honors, awards, accomplishments. **

e.  Past Employment History including institution name and location, position title and dates of employment.

 

For Fellow Applicants:

f.   Mentor’s name, institution location,and e-mail address.

g.  Names and e-mail addresses for two references.

h. Fellowship goals **

i.   Title and Abstract for Research Plan. **

j.   Research Plan **

For Mentor Applicants:

k.   Fellow’s Name and e-mail address.

l.    Total pre- and post-doctoral fellows you’ve trained in past.

m.  For a representative five fellows list their current employing organizations and job titles.

n.  Mentor’s Statement **

3.   We recommend that you prepare your application information in a separate word processing document.  Once you are ready to begin the application, the system will allow you to cut and paste information from the word processing document in to the different application data fields.  By following this recommendation, you can avoid problems that may occur with some internet connections (see #5 below). 

4.   Once you begin the electronic application you must finish your work.   You can NOT save your work in order to finish it at a later time.  

5.   A Special Note about Internet Connections:

     a.     Some internet networks require that data be transferred regularly [every 3 to 5 minutes] in order to retain the internet connection.  This            is especially true for institutions or organizations that use an internet network designed to limit the number of internet portals accessible
           (online) at any given moment
.

     b.     Use of a high-speed internet connection is recommended when completing this application. 

     c.     If you receive a message that “the host server” is not available, it is possible that you lost your internet connection during the application
            process and unfortunately you will need to start over. 

6.  SPECIAL NOTE FOR APRIL 17.  If you experience technical difficulties submitting your online application, you are permitted to download and      complete the Word version of the fellow or mentor application (see The Application #1).  If you must use the Word version of the      applications, send your completed application via e-mail to Ms. Lisa Jordre at ljordre@iqsolutions.com.  Please be sure your application      includes complete date information for all date fields ~ mm/dd/yy.  We must receive your completed application by April 17, 2009.
